Was it always like this?
Think back to your first day on the job.
Were you relieved at the prospect of making more money? Intrigued
by the chance to solve new problems? Thankful for the opportunity
to put your skills to productive use? Excited by the chance to
prove yourself? Usually the "honeymoon period" of a new job comes
with a variety of positive experiences... and very little dread.
The honeymoon is over
Somewhere along the line, the picture
changes. Things may deteriorate slowly or quickly, but the
truth is that many of
us grow to dislike our work. Sooner or later, it starts to seem
like it has always been that way.
Maybe it's just a book... or maybe it's a
movement
None of us dreamed in our youth of a work
life filled with misery and dread. None of us told our high school
counselors that we expected the highlight of our life to be at
retirement age. Yet many of us experience those thoughts and
feelings today.
These aren't vaguely inconvenient or unpleasant notions; they are real experiences which effect both our engagement and our performance at our jobs, and can even impact our health. And they are preventable!!!
Taking Control and Getting Results
The Like Work Again Coalition is about
putting the tools for career satisfaction in the hands of those who need
them... the workers! It is about learning to consciously manage
the relationship between worker and job, so that the "marriage" is as
positive as it can be. The honeymoon may be over, but that doesn't
mean the relationship must turn permanently sour.
Rather than "tolerating things" for as long as we can before quitting unpredictably, workers can reclaim at least a few positive experiences and make a change for the better. Many may find they no longer feel the need to quit at their earliest opportunity. And those who do still wish to quit will be better positioned to find better situations elsewhere, and less likely to go from bad to worse.
Is the coalition for employers too? Of course! By making these tools available to employees, and encouraging them to use them, employers can help workers become more productive, and less likely to quit unpredictably.
